Starting out your search for the right home to buy is an exciting event, and this is something you should not rush through. If you are buying your very first home and do not know exactly how to handle showings, here are several good tips to help you know the proper etiquette to use as you begin looking at different homes for sale.
Take off your shoes
Remember, during viewings you are entering someone's home. This is the place they live, and they may have worked really hard to clean their house for this showing. Because of this, you should always remove your shoes at the door, unless there is a sign that says not to. Removing your shoes is simply showing respect to the owner of the house, and it is always good to respect someone else's property.
Do not look inside dressers and other types of furniture
Secondly, you should avoid looking inside personal things the person owns. This includes dressers, nightstands, and other types of drawers in furniture. You can, however, look inside fixtures that will come with the house, such as bathroom vanities, medicine cabinets, kitchen cabinets, and drawers in cabinets.
Do not eat while you view the house
If you are hungry before a showing, eat at home or in your car on the way there but never eat inside someone's house during a viewing. There are times when home sellers may leave treats for you to eat. If this is the case, there will be a note on the counter next to the treats, and you can help yourself. You should stay in the kitchen, though, if this occurs during your viewings.
Leave small children at home
The other thing to keep in mind is that you probably should not bring small kids with you to showings. Small children tend to wander off and touch things they should not be touching. It can be hard to really view a home thoroughly if you have young kids with you, too, so you should aim to view homes without your children if possible. If your kids are old enough to behave well, then you should not have a problem bringing them with.
