Transfer the utilities into your name

This may include gas, electric, water, sewer, cable, and Internet services. It will be your responsibility to do this before closing, and you should make sure the transfers are completed by the date of your closing.
Forward your mail and change your address
Before you move, you will also need to contact the post office and let them know you are moving. When you do this, you can fill out a change of address form, and this should automatically forward your mail from your current home to the new house you are moving to. This is something you can do weeks in advance, because you can ask for this to start on any date you choose.
Schedule a moving company
If you do not want to handle the move by yourself, you will need to contact and schedule a moving company, and this is something you should do at least a month before your move. Many moving companies are busy and they may need a few weeks notice before they can provide you with the services you need, so make sure you call ahead of time.
